A thin layer of graphite

The graphite is not actually used to make graphite pencil. The graphite is in the graphite core and the aluminum powder is in a thin layer inside of it

How is the graphite pencil made?

The graphite is typically made by processing steel

If you think of the core of a steel pencil as an aluminum can you can imagine what the can of graphite looks like. Imagine each cell of the can contains a layer of carbon. That layer is composed of two different metals, Aluminum and graphite. Each cell contains a layer of pure carbon. As this graphite is processed, it is exposed to heat and to chemicals in order to convert it into graphite. In some cases, it is also processed at high pressure

This graphite is then exposed to an arc of air. This arc is produced by high temperature steam. Eventually a piece of steel (not an aluminum can) is reduced to graphite at a temperature of over 1000 degrees Celsius. After further cooling, the metal is polished to a shine without any chemical process

Why Are Graphite Pins Made in China?

Graphite comes from the ore known as chromite. Chromite is commonly found along the western and northern edges of the Himalayas in India. China is known to have produced more of this element than any other country in the world.

Does the cost difference between the two kinds of pencils lead to quality problems?

The cost difference may be the cause to this pencil has so many defects when compared side by side.
