Maeve: She’s like a lot of people. She’s a pretty smart little puppet. Well, she’s pretty smart, she’s pretty quiet, and she’s just like her father. She doesn’t really talk. She would talk if she wanted to. It’s more like the same person, more and more. But the way she talks, it’s always “I know you’re the puppet, I’ve always known you,” or “I love you” instead of “let’s work together.” She really tries to get along with people. [laughs]
Did you keep going by yourself through this process?
[laughs] Yeah, yeah, it’s a little odd. I went back, “Oh my God, I need to watch out for it.” I was a bit freaked out. She’s like, “Oh, they’ll come at me like that!” “Let’s keep going.” It got me to be a bit more professional when I got out there.
Are you going to make a TV commercial?
[laughs] Never! I might do a video clip or something. But that’s about it. [laughs]
Can you walk us through the transition between writing these songs, and then working on the album? You had the song “Shine” on the radio with Katy Perry so early on in your career. How do you decide when to make a record and when not to?
[laughs] Yeah, we kind of went into it kind of like we were like, “We get it. We’re doing it!” [mumbles] I’ve had a few things happen that have influenced me when it’s like, we know we’re going to take it to the next level. I’m very much in love with making something great, no matter how crazy. Whether or not it’s going to be for a radio station, we do it. It’s what we love to do, and I think I’m pretty good at it too. So that’s how it started, I think, from having an album on hold and I didn’t know what kind of music we wanted to make and the way we wanted to go about it. Then I made this album. We’re going to do it.
But you were already going to do something else.
No, we weren’t. That wasn’t necessarily in my mind. That’s just the way songwriting works. I’ve been so lucky in the last couple years,
