There are lots of different types of puppets out there, but one thing that really sticks out to me is the fact that there is this idea that a puppet cannot do anything without a microphone. If I was trying to talk on stage or sing, I have to wear a big microphone with a microphone and a microphone, and I have to stand near a microphone — so you have to have a little puppet that is like a microphone that you can use. Well, what if the puppets can do that but do it on their own? That’s the kind of puppet we are talking about here.

You write that as an adult you have to “put on a show,” not as a child. Was that in the movie?

Yes, that’s what I was trying to say and not a little bit. When I was a child, I would stand there waiting for my mother to come home, and my mother would put her arm around my shoulder and say, “Let’s go out to the park.” And I could go out and do my thing, and I would go out and be a little girl standing at the corner looking at cars. I was so scared to start crying, like, “Oh, I’m sorry, am I supposed to be doing this?” But that was because I had my mother’s touch. That was the way I became a little kid.

This is a movie from which no one has really spoken, and I’m curious what it was like when Steven Spielberg saw it.

I don’t think anyone knows, but I think we made him very happy. That’s what I always said to him. He asked, “How’d you like it?” I said, “I think it was good,” and he said, “Thank you.”

Why did you decide to use a puppet for a movie that’s so much more of a story than even your previous work?

Well, I wanted this movie to be different than my other ones, and I always wanted, from the beginning, to keep it in its essence, to make it about kids. But I also figured that if I made it as an adult, which I did, it would be really interesting to make this for an adult audience instead of another adult audience. It could have a lot of fun for the kids. So I went and met with an advertising agency for a film called One Step
