How do magic tricks magic? – Youtube Magic Tricks Tutorial Tagalog-English Dictionary

I got this question from Chris on Tuesday, after I had made a big show of writing about how we should start taking the magic out of school. Chris is just a little too passionate about the whole whole art and science thing to not say something about it, and so this time he wrote this.
I have an idea:
Teaching basic mathematics as a prerequisite for all schools requiring an English language degree is both un-American and un-inclusive.
I was thinking a bit about it the other day and wondered if I would even need to address this. I mean, as a public school teacher this isn’t a big thing. But I’ve been thinking lately about math, and I thought maybe it might be of use to all of us (even a first-grader like me) if we could talk about math so that someone could understand its meaning.
A quick search on google revealed this wonderful explanation of “math” (PDF) from The Math Forum, which I’ve found particularly useful:
The word “math” has a history as a “soft” or “abstract” word with no special sense. However, it became a “hard” or “specific” word (and has an entirely different meaning) with the emergence of mathematics in the 18th century.
The word math isn’t as simple as just “circles” and straight lines, either in the case of straight lines, or in the case of “circles with straight sides.” The origin of the word is not as clear-cut as we think. It is sometimes called a “mathematical theory” or “mathematical axiom,” which can lead to some confusing confusion. Also, although “math” usually refers to certain general concepts that can be applied to all kinds of situations, we know of no precise definitions for these general concepts, or for “math.” As you read or study these definitions, you come to realize that a great deal of meaning is missing, and that they do not help us to understand our situation.
Now, this doesn’t excuse or excuse anybody at all. But it is a really great way to explain what a math “proof” is, and to figure out what is actually going on in a class (or at least the section you are in).
For example, here’s the gist of some math that can be used to prove that two squares do not divide:
Let’s see if we can prove three things
