Bengaluru: With the recent hike in fuel price, the amount in the pockets of the farmers has decreased, and a large chunk of farmers have gone hungry. Food inflation has surged to 3 per cent year-on-year, according to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NRES), the latest data compiled by the agriculture ministry.
Of the 7.25 lakh rural households in the state, 2.24 lakh are already below the poverty line, and the same is projected to increase to 2.83 lakh by March 2015, officials said. The increase was even more marked in the cities, the urban and the rural areas.
“Food inflation has increased by 3 per cent year-on-year in the last two years. This is due to a fall in the value of rupees against the rupee against which imported foodgrains are priced. The subsidy has already come down from Rs 50,000 per tonne which was the amount raised in 2010-2011.
The farmer’s problem was worsened with the price hike in petrol and diesel, which had risen by 15 per cent in March 2012. Farmers are also demanding to increase their subsidy amount on farm produce, especially on fertilisers and rice.
“It has worsened our financial burden to make up for the price rise. In the case of our farmers, there is an ongoing controversy over the fact that not only are farm produce in our area being bought with black money, but farmers do not get proper market prices for the same. This has become the reason for our plight, so we are demanding proper market prices for the same,” the official said. It is on the demand of farmers that the state has
