A friend of mine brought up that idea on Twitter recently. It was fun to think about how to explain Tesla’s free energy on a grand scale. My idea is that the free energy isn’t a simple thing like a pie that someone made and gave the rest of your meals. It’s a function of the energy in the sun’s energy. In the past we’ve often seen a lot of people in the solar industry talk about how we got started, how we went on to build solar panels, or how we built solar arrays. How have we got so far? Are we out there in the field of free energy, or is it just that we’re working in a lab?
Well, for one thing, it’s possible to think about Tesla without thinking about the industry. We’ve been talking about an energy-generating “watts” for quite some time. In a lot of ways, they’re really useful as a shorthand for how much electricity a battery can store. The term is also really useful because it captures this idea that everything we do, in our cars, our homes, and our computers are connected. Every little change can store energy in the battery, and in the end we don’t even realize what we’re changing until it’s too late to do anything about it.
So Tesla was just thinking about energy, not an industry. But it was still an amazing question, and one that has come up again and again and again. Here’s a problem. I was a kid in the early ’80s. I remember the days when I could go to a gas station, fill up a car, and drive across town. I don’t remember what I paid for the car, but I definitely remember the excitement of it. It was a moment of wonder. Then, by the early ’90s, the day we hit that oil wall were the days when oil was cheap. Oil isn’t that expensive.
Then, as the price fell, this idea that we could get our cars to charge without the need to own a gas station appeared and took off, and it has continued to grow. There are ways that Tesla is helping people get around, but most of the benefits that we’ve gained through our success are due to our technology’s ability to create energy from solar power, wind, and some other sources.
That doesn’t mean the entire industry has become green or renewable. It’s important to note that solar has been around for about 100 years, and its energy comes from
