Water is a liquid at normal temperatures, but it has a high boiling point to give it the characteristics of solid at high or cold temperatures. It behaves as a solid at liquid or vapor temperatures only at the temperatures that it freezes into. Water has two kinds of solid phases, crystalline and amorphous, which are discussed further in this section.

What does the temperature of water get to do?
The water molecules are held together between the ice crystals in the Earth’s crust by very strong gravitational forces. As the water molecules get bigger, the ice becomes less dense, and the water freezes into a state called permafrost, or permanently frozen ground.
The temperature at which water is permanently frozen in permafrost in one place is about -40° F (7° C). This is warmer than most liquid in the Earth’s deep interior. This makes it the coldest ground surface on the Earth. It is the same temperature as the ground surface of the Earth and the deepest ice cap of all. If you were to float on a floating ice cube, it would have a surface temperature of about -25° F (about –30° C) without any water on it (the water would have melted). This is very cold water temperature when you are moving horizontally (from surface to bedrock). The freezing/frozen state of water is also the most sensitive indicator when it freezes because it shows us to what extent the water is frozen.
