How do we understand and control them?

Let’s answer the basic questions. First, what exactly is that little square? Where did it go? Who is it? And how does it do what it does?

We begin with an observation of how we make assumptions about space and time. We all have a way of assuming we live inside our own heads where everything and nothing are separate, distinct, and unique–without a moment in-between. If you look very carefully at a piece of paper, you will see that the lines and letters represent the space on it. So the space becomes your space, and the ink and paper represent your time.

Here is an example: If an astronomer, mathematician, or physicist makes a claim about how the universe works, we typically assume he did so in a vacuum. He or she did not interact with any outside world. We assume that because he was trying to answer our questions, there is no need for us to believe anything different from what he was saying. His words are our truth, and we need only believe them because of the way we perceive them. It is like he is saying what we should believe, and is speaking for all of us, so we can all agree on what it all means. He is speaking for everybody.

But this is only the beginning of the argument. When you move beyond that example to consider what happens when an observer takes over the role of the observer, the assumption of the vacuum gets turned on its head and we find a very different set of rules to apply–at least in the case of our universe.

If you could somehow go into our universe and take over the role of an observer for an indefinite length of time–we would have to say he didn’t spend time as an observer, but rather that he never experienced any other observer that had more time to be an observer. This is because the world we observe is the only universe that ever came into being, so the space is completely empty. So the only people you ever have the privilege of experiencing in those kinds of circumstances would be the initial observers.

I’m not saying this just to be provocative: I know this is false. But I hope it is intriguing enough to have the chance to write a post and to ask for some people to consider the question. I’m pretty sure most people reading this are pretty skeptical of the idea of an infinite time continuum. If the idea makes you uncomfortable, don’t say so. But I do think it is
