He was born George R.R. Martin in 1932 in New York. His mother was a writer who went by the name Edna Moore, but he had no real-life relationship – he had always wanted to grow up and “become an author”. He was born to a middle class family with a large Jewish background. He was often called a “smart kid” in high school. His parents divorced when he was three and only his mother was with him while growing up. According to a report in Time:

“By the time he reached second grade, he was barely paying attention. He told me that he had been in bed so much that it was hard for him to remember the names of any books his mother or his brother were carrying. By the time he reached the University of Florida, he was already a self-taught author, but he never finished college. As a teenager, he loved going on excursions where he was always dressed in leather coats and boots. “My dad was the only one of my siblings to attend college,” he says. “I grew up on the ’50s and ’60s, and I have always been fascinated by the new world, and the culture.”

Martin was an academic all his life and majored in psychology in college. The two of them met while working on The Iceman Cometh, the story of King Arthur’s final battle with Mordred. King got the idea of combining the two and they wrote seven-ish books, which were serialized in The New Yorker from 1984 until the end of the 1980s. Martin also won the Hugo Award for best novel for his King series in 1992. The final King book, The Drawing of the Three, came out in 2011 and was a success that made him rich, famous and powerful.

And now Martin’s writing is a huge success: a successful trilogy and a best-selling novel. Martin’s best seller the Song of Ice and Fire is the series that sparked the entire series in his mind. Martin writes the whole of the books, including the ending, with fantasy and science fiction themes, and a big focus on magic, science and religion. His writing is a big part of him.
