Tensions between the United States and North Korea have escalated with President Donald Trump threatening to “totally destroy” the rogue nation. The new tensions come as U.S. military forces are currently being redeployed to South Korea to provide a boost to the military presence along its east coast with a deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system that could potentially be used to protect U.S. ally South Korea.
In an op-ed for the Washington Post, retired Army Col. William Hartung decried the “bureaucratic” attitude of the Obama-era administration toward the North as well as the failure of China-initiated U.N. sanctions, as well as attempts by U.S. military leaders such as Northrop Grumman Chief Executive Bill Nye to push the U.N. to implement sanctions against Pyongyang.
The Obama administration was so intent on isolating North Korea that there appears to have been little effort to help the country develop its civilian industries, Hartung wrote. North Korea already exports a substantial amount of natural resources to the west coast of China, so North Koreans are now working for Chinese factories to use their products to support the Pyongyang regime.
“As for the U.N. sanctions, I don’t think they worked. I would much rather see the U.S. military do something. But even more importantly, China needs to be involved,” he told a Washington-based think tank called the Atlantic Council, which hosted his talk Saturday. “One of your great strengths is that you really have two poles, where the U.S. and China have very different economic views. For better or for worse, the U.S. has to be involved in both economic activities and U.N. Security Council resolutions.”
The problem, Hartung said, is that “China feels it has to be a very strong player.”
