There’s no need to cut them down to size. Cut them into 5-6 inch sections to prepare them for making saffron paste. You don’t even need to boil them. I usually make saffron paste about one week prior to paring the saffron – that’s how long they cook for.
What else do I need to know about cutting saffron? It’s easy! To make saffron paste, you’ll have to first saffronize your saffron. To saffronize saffron in India, we have to steam it by taking the bulb and pressing it with our hands and rubbing the oil onto it. After that, we boil the saffron for at least 10 minutes and then place it under the shower, while boiling the saffron and then steam the steam as well. We boil the saffron slowly so it simmers down. You can cook the saffron in the microwave if that’s easier. You should then cut your saffron to the shape you want, as described under How can I cook saffron?
You might be wondering, when can I make saffron paste again? Once the saffron is saffronized, you can either boil it with the other ingredients, or boil it on the stovetop using the saffron paste method. I like a combination of both.
Can I make saffron paste again in the future? Yes! After removing the bulb, you can use the same spices you use in making the saffron in the past, or a different spice combination. You don’t have to use the same spices as I did. If you are making saffron paste again, I suggest giving it a try! 🙂
Is it easy to make saffron paste in India? Yes! When I did it in India, there were a lot of things to learn about making a paste. For example, I had to make a lot of extra ingredients and use a lot of time, which is not easy to do when you have to make the paste for an event and you don’t have a kitchen or a stove. It’s a lot of work, which I really enjoyed doing. 🙂 I have also made a lot of errors along the way and I feel better about myself now. It’s really nice that I can learn from mistakes and learn from my mistakes. 🙂
