Does Rustoleum enamel need primer? – Spray Paint Art Supplies

It’s a mystery:

Rustoleum enamel’s primer works much more consistently than zinc oxide or copper primer. Rustoleum enamel usually comes with a set of two, but I’ve heard that Rustoleum enamel can also come with just one—which is probably too expensive for some.

Zinc oxide primer works with a more subtle amount of primer than Rustoleum enamel does. It comes with a clear plastic or clear plastic-covered container for it, which works very well—just the wrong size for the primer.

It’s almost like the difference between regular primer-free primer and regular primer-plus-pearl-coated primer is an optical illusion. The clear plastic comes with enough primer to cover the enamel and to be fairly subtle without detracting from its appearance. With regular white enamel primer the enamel is barely visible, whereas with regular pearl-coated enamel it’s almost totally invisible, which works for me. I wouldn’t call it “invisible” by any means but it is not as dramatic, hence why it can look like a little bit more, depending on the size. I still prefer it over regular white enamel, but not as much as I would with yellow enamel primer.

The one caveat that I’ve noticed is you need a clear container. It’s a mystery: Rustoleum enamel’s primer works much more consistently than zinc oxide or copper primer.
