To answer the question of who actually has enough money to be able to play a professional poker game, we ran an experiment with a pool of over 2,400 players from around the world who would be willing to gamble more than $10,000 on one hand (1/20 chance of winning). One participant would play as many games as he/she could in a given 30–60 minute span during a one day period and would receive $10,000 bonus for each game won. This game would be played over the course of ten days and would only require the player to play at least a few dozen hands per day.
Once we began this trial, we began to see large disparities within the top decks. We also noticed patterns where the players who played the lowest amounts of money were also the least successful in their game, which indicates that this strategy really only works for the very lowest earners. As an experiment you will soon see that this was a fairly consistent finding.
Why do poker players win so much more than no-limit hold’em players?
Poker players in general have more access to high stakes casinos. On the other hand the majority of players play no game at all. There are, however, some strategies that take advantage of both of these limitations.
We had a hypothesis that the strategy of playing low stakes would put a damper on the success of poker players on longer holding periods, but this is exactly what happened. We also observed a consistent pattern in poker where players with a greater bankroll tend to lose more often. Players with the smallest payouts tend to lose more often with shorter holding periods.
How does this hold true when we look at each individual hand individually?
The strategy to play low-wagers makes a player less likely to go on big streaks. The less time, the better. We can call this the ‘fraction strategy’. In fact the less time players spend playing low-wagers, the less chance they have to make big mistakes. Players spend the most time watching the table and making decisions to be able to see a better hand at a given time than are actually out for a better hand.
For a specific hand, the more time you spend watching the table, the closer you get to the table. This is why you may also see players play on a bigger bankroll than they could have otherwise because they don’t have time to make more mistakes to be at the table.
