“This is a very challenging job. It takes a lot of training and experience. It’s not a good one for the average person. There’s a lot of pressure on them, too,” says Koppi of the casino’s workers.
There’s also a reason casino workers aren’t as familiar with the job’s perks as their more experienced counterparts: the hours. Most people who work in the casinos work eight-hour days. And those are hours that are often spent at the table, and not on the board itself.
“They’re not the top of the line. They’re the bottom,” says Koppi.
A high-end casino worker doesn’t get much sleep beyond what the job requires, and even then, some stay up until 4 a.m. to be around the game.
“They’re working around the clock. A lot of them are at the table at 4 in the morning. It’s very, very demanding.”
But there are perks. Casino employees have the option to make at least $20 per hour working two and five hours, and they’re also covered for up to 40 hours of maternity and paternity leave.
And there’s the most important perk of all, “there is a guarantee [to] get paid.” When you’re working here, you know everything is guaranteed. And even the casino offers you insurance if you need it. According to Koppi, employees have the choice of what kind of insurance they’ll have — and the casino won’t kick them if it turns out they need it.
In fact, casino workers have the same health benefits as their non-casino colleagues. They get health insurance through the state of Florida, the federal Employee Health and Retirement Benefits program, and also through the federal Medicare program.
It’s a lot of coverage, but at the end of the day, your money is your retirement. And one thing is certain about their benefits.
“We have a 401(k) plan. There’s a [Medigap] plan. And there’s a supplemental plan. We all have our health insurance,” says Koppi.
The benefits will last for a lifetime. And it doesn’t cost you anything extra to stay on the company.
“You’re not paying anything extra for insurance. We work hard for the wages we get for working here, but we’re not being asked to work more than 40 hours a week,” she adds.
