The New Black Panther Party (NBPP) is poised to announce a nationwide strategy in February in response to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on a Brooklyn street patrol officer this past December, in which NBPP President Malik Zulu Shabazz said one “of the officers should not have been there.”
“What we’re going to do is we’re going be bringing the blackness of all the people to the streets,” said Shabazz, a.k.a. Malik Zulu, while at a community meeting in Brooklyn Tuesday afternoon.
“We won’t be fighting with the police,” he added. “We’ll be dealing with the police because they have no respect for the people or the community.”
The police, Shabazz continued, have “sick and sad hearts” and do not “protect the people, they don’t care, we’re going to fight with the people.”
In addition, the New Black Panther Party is working with local activists to create “community workshops and events,” and will be encouraging residents to participate in the “Black Unity March” taking place in Manhattan on Feb. 15.
On Tuesday night, Shabazz and a group of about a dozen black activists held a vigil on Sixth Avenue in Harlem at the site of NYPD Chief of Department Ray Kelly’s December raid on the Brooklyn street patrol officer, allegedly because he was black.
The incident, Shabazz said, was the result of “the police having no respect for the black community, no respect for our community.”
In December, a federal judge ordered Kelly to pay $8,000 in damages to the black street patrol Officer Brian Moore.
According to court papers, Moore was found in compliance with department rules by Kelly’s officers at the request of the NBPP and the New York City Democratic Party.
But since the judge ruled against the officers, some NYPD officers involved in the December raid have gone on strike.
A petition signed by more than 1,000 members, as well as the NBPP, in support of the group has been started.
