The following is an excerpt from the book “Biblical Archaeology Review” by Steven M. LeCompte : Archaeologist David Barreto is a Professor of Archaeology at the University of Chicago.

The archaeological record of ancient Israel has long been the subject of debate. How, as a society, did people settle into agriculture in this territory in the third millennium B.C.? How could such a small territory accommodate so many people? And what happened next?

The archaeological record of Israel is a rich and complex picture of culture and settlement, of which the earliest archeological sites are the first steps. In the course of the Iron Age period, as the land absorbed peoples of a multitude of ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious identity, the earliest settlements were made on what is now the northeasternmost part of the country. This was a plain with good grazingland, and a large population on top of it, which could accommodate a small number of people, living in smaller groups, and without a significant amount of protection from the surrounding wilderness. The early farmers settled mostly along a single main river, Jordan, that emptied into a large canal system that brought water to these settled areas where it could be collected across the plain. The water for the canal was used by farmers and their animals, to irrigate fields and make water available. The process of agricultural settlement began in earnest during the Roman period, whose records are the most detailed from that era. The great bulk of the early settlement is accounted for by a series of settlements that are sometimes called the First and Second Canaanite Periods. These settlements are the early settlers of the country.

The history of agriculture in Israel generally begins around A.D. 1500-1500 B.C. in the region known as the Jordan Valley, the land that had been settled by the early Canaanites who had come from the southern Levant, where the Israelites and the Philistines had fought each other there in A.D. 200-200 B.C. When the Philistines left the area and moved over to the northern extent of the plain, the Israelites and the Israelites alone retained this region and were left to their own devices to make the journey across the desert.
