How should I draw inspiration?
The art world needs a greater diversity in its writers and artists. We need more female cartoonists and storytellers as well as more voices of color. Our art needs to inspire and inform not just ourselves, but more people around us as well. The best part of all of this, though, is that if you’re looking to get involved, you can do so in a way that actually helps others.
So, how could you help?
There are two reasons, I suppose. The first step is to find out where the work you like is being created. There are loads of resources like this one to help you locate the best creators and art teams.
The second step involves finding out what it would take to get something in the work and make it happen. Here are just a few of the resources and communities I’ve been in contact with over the years.
1. Go to The Furry Art League.
This is sort of a community of artists and illustrators that have been around since 1999. Its a massive international group of artists and designers who are actively looking to expand out into the world with their work and are on a pretty strong financial footing. This can seem daunting at first, as well.
But, once you get started, they’ll guide you towards more resources as they help you get going. The folks from The Furry Art League have an awesome Facebook page with loads of helpful artwork to help you get started. If you need help finding a furry artist, they have an extensive searchable database.
2. Find and follow artists whose work you’re a fan of.
I used to try and follow all of the furry artists on DeviantArt, but eventually found it was easier just to follow the artists they created. There are tons of them and there’s a new one every couple weeks. I’d say try to follow one or two of their accounts!
Also, there are several different groups of artists who are creating their art on Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram. Each of these are quite different, but if you’re going to check out art from an artist in one of those platforms, check their feed first. That way, you’ll have an idea of what’s going on in that artist’s world and hopefully you’ll make friends in the community as you explore and follow their creations.
3. Write about your favorite furry artists.
