Mind reading allows an agent to find out information about the thoughts and feelings of other people. An experiment was performed in which an agent, without the guidance of any direct physical stimulus, was asked to read aloud a series of text messages of five different meanings. While the experimenter was reading one type, the agent performed several mental calculations using the text. For example, the agent started with the meaning “The sky was white”, then changed to “I can’t see the sky well, but I’m a good runner”, then back to “It’s a fine night, there are stars”, and finally back to “I can’t see the sky well, but I can run”. The information that the agent learnt from this mental calculation (the meaning and the number of stars) was then uploaded into the mind of another person. Since the mind of the agent did not know the words the other person had chosen, this information could not be used in their own conversations with their spouses, for instance, which were being used to measure mental health, or in other ways. Mind reading can occur in any form of digital communication including text, audio, and video – the only thing needed to perform it is a computer and a network.
Can people actually read their own minds? This is one of the great mysteries of science. While there have been many attempts to find out, they haven’t succeeded. So far, no matter what you do, just saying “I’m really good at playing computer games” doesn’t give any information about your real skills.
What happens if the mindreading experiment is done correctly? A researcher from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, University of California at San Diego, and Yale University found this out by running a computer experiment in which they randomly placed an unknown, unedited voice at the top of the screen. They then asked an unseen person to rate the quality of the original voice, and when they did so, they found that the unseen voice was rated more positive than the original. In other words, the unseen voice seemed aware of its own identity. But if its personality was taken into account, it became very clear that the unseen voice was actually a complete stranger.
Is it possible to get more intelligence from reading your own mind? In a study, a team of Chinese psychologists at the University of Hong Kong and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou found that Chinese students could become twice as intelligent if they took a course on “mindreading” that included readings of the
