I can’t believe some of you still ask that. It’s a simple question, but it really drives me insane, and, to this point, no one can answer it. Because that’s the thing: There’s no answer, and we’ll continue to go on asking until someone makes an answer. And that’s what I don’t like. I just don’t like people asking this question to me! Now, yes, most people ask, and you can do all kinds of things to get them off the hook (I don’t know about the art world, so I’m not saying this will help, but there’s also a sense of “well, you’re not a bad artist; maybe you just don’t like this part of the universe”). But I’ve had lots of people ask me that question in the past, and I don’t understand why they asked it in the first place. I just couldn’t get the question out of my head.
A lot of people ask, and I have a few answers. The answer is simple and obvious, and to those of you who don’t understand it: we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing! Yes, some people ask, and there’s some advice you can offer to them (don’t ask about “real life” (although this is a real thing, but not a thing we create), or about the art world (the “real” art world is a big bubble of people who have no experience). But the main point is, we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing! It’s the same with our games, the main point of which is to have fun.
But I don’t think people understand how hard it is to make something good and fun, and how we’re not supposed to do that. The game industry is a game industry. So we want what we want, and when we do and when we don’t, it’s our responsibility as players to take control of that. We’re not obligated to make games the way we want them to be.
The games we make aren’t the same things as the games made by people who have “real world” experience. In the real world, art has to live, and live in the right environment, in order to be interesting. We have to find ourselves in a creative situation, with the right tools and the right environment, and we have to figure out how to create and express that creative situation. The game industry does those things for you.
