Does saffron lose its flavor? – How Many Saffron Bulbs Per Acre

“I’ve had both saffron and sesame seeds,” writes The Daily Telegraph, “but it is in a glass of water and will leave a ‘saffron’ after a few days.”

So saffron oil has plenty of antioxidants, but it can also get bitter. You’ll lose out on some of its flavor if you just consume it hot.

7. You’ll die.

The Daily Mail has a list of the most dangerous foods:

1) Saffron

2) Sesame oil

3) Potatoes, in boiled or unboiled

4) Eggs

5) Pears

6) Soy cream

7) Corn, any cooking oil (including canola and rice)

The most recent edition of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) Dietary Supplement Safety Information, provides some details on the safety of food flavoring in the form of saffron. (The last time we checked the FDA, saffron isn’t listed as a prohibited substance.)

The FDA found that “in foods and dietary supplements containing saffron … dietary supplements are generally safe,” but it warns that “when used in the foods and dietary supplements where they normally are not … consumers should be aware that they may be taking supplements containing saffron.”

So saffron is fine for eating — it just may not be safe to chew.

8. But it’ll still do the trick.

The British Medical Journal recently reviewed some of the safety and effectiveness of saffron oil in a study published in the British Medical Journal.

In the study of about 80 Dutch consumers, they found that even though saffron oil didn’t make them get older, it did keep the subjects from dropping out of school or getting sick.

The benefits include less risk of coronary heart disease and less incidence of cancer, and they reported that “saffron oil consumption reduced body weight and risk of hypertension.”

The researchers also noted that “saffron oil consumption at a dietary level may even confer protection against mortality by delaying the aging process.”

9. It can actually help with arthritis.

One of the health benefits of saffron oil is that it can have anti-inflammatory effects. And an analysis published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that eating saffron oil made subjects feel healthier
