A federal appeals court in San Francisco on Tuesday struck down the state’s controversial voter ID law, which some critics say will lead to voter suppression.

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court struck down California’s voter-ID law on Tuesday and could have broad ramifications for the country’s voting laws, and even the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco threw out the state’s law under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, saying it would disenfranchise minority voters.

The case involved a challenge to the state’s 2008 voter-ID law, which was a key element of President Barack Obama’s 2012 victory in the state. It was challenged in state and federal courts by both Democrats and Republicans.

Last month, a federal appellate court upheld a California Supreme Court ruling blocking the law. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block the decision.

But Tuesday’s 6th Circuit ruling — by U.S. District Judge James Robart — said California’s law likely would lead to greater voter suppression.
