The truth is you don’t really have to spend years learning to do graffiti. It’s not going to be a “one day” thing, but you have to focus on the basics.
There are all these beginner tutorials and articles about how to paint and that’s absolutely fine; do it and learn it. I personally learned the art of graffiti a long time ago and have done it professionally for over 20 years, including over 20 years of traveling the world working with large scale, fast-paced urban graffiti for clients. I’ve never spent time learning how to do this.
I would say that in four weeks, you’d need to be a beginner. Not in a real short time frame, but in a few.
However, if you go to a workshop and you’re able to learn everything that’s on that day; whether it be how to paint the letters or the brush strokes, then you’ve likely spent more time researching and practicing. You’ve likely already learned how to do a lot of the things that are important to be able to do and you can move on.
So, do your research early and get some experience before you’re ever seriously thinking about moving to Los Angeles. Otherwise, you’ll likely never be fully prepared for all of the opportunities that are going to be offered to you.
What is the average number of spray cans I need?
The minimum you need is three. It doesn’t even matter if you need a specific size; your goal is to have your kit ready in less than three days.
Why spend time on graffiti if I have all the tools already?
I’m not going to say that you have to be proficient in the tools and techniques to do graffiti; if it’s just a matter of seeing and touching a few pieces of the graffiti; you’ll get the hang of it.
However, if you want to go to LA and be able to paint graffiti, you need to have solid, basic knowledge in all of the following areas:
How to use a spray bottle for paint
How to apply paint with different colors
How to paint a stencil
