During the Black Death, the plague killed up to 35 percent of people infected by the bacteria. It could be transmitted from person to person after the initial illness developed. The disease began killing people and causing severe pain shortly after infection began. It could take up to a week for a person to die from a bacterial infection caused by Y. pestis, particularly after the first few days after infection.
