What happened to the “danceable, beatable rap”? What’s wrong with the “mixed bag” of rap styles?
I don’t know the answer to any of these questions except for one: “What did you do to your hair when you did it for the video?” It was so weird. It’s like, you’ve gone from being hip-hop’s top-of-the-line kid to a complete failure of a hip-hop producer. That was my first reaction when I saw that. “He’s gone from hip to dead,” I thought.
It’s like a kid on a diet, going, “You know what? I’m not hungry. I’m a kid.” Or some hip-hop veteran, like myself, who’s got all these albums under his belt and he has this whole network and he has all these relationships and he has his fans—you’re going to drop a song that is like, “I’m cool because I made a song about me, like I’m an artist/That’s cool because I got the big hair.” I got the big hair.
Did that strike you as being ironic or do you think it could have been taken a little more seriously or like another angle?
In no way, that was ironic. It was really funny. The thing with me and Rap Monster is we kind of play ourselves. I’m the little kid, Rap Monster is the older, seasoned veteran. That wasn’t meant to be meant to be ironic. That’s like, “Look, we’re a bit of a joke.” I feel like I always said at the time that I was like, “Yeah, I could be a joke. We have jokes between us.” You have somebody like Rap Monster, the guy who never took a dime, who’s the best at taking shots, who’s the most honest with himself, and saying, “Man, I love that stuff and it’s the biggest joke in the world.” It was definitely meant as a joke, to be honest. I just thought, Man, I would do it, but now I feel like the joke was bigger than me. It was meant to be a joke. I didn’t think that Rap Monster was gonna turn around and be like, “I don’t wanna do that again.” So I was like, Fuck, fuck, fuck yeah, I’m gonna do that again.
