I draw it in the same way as humans draw them. I draw it standing up, looking down, up-hearing his companions.

In the summer of 2016, you may have heard about the discovery of fossilized human bones in an ice cave in the North Dakota State University campus. Some of the bones were so badly damaged that all they looked like were large human jaws, but they were also covered with tiny incisions—presumably made when they were caught and then dragged under snow or gravel, so that they stopped short of the bone in their jaws. The bones were part of a juvenile human fossil that is known as the “Watson hominid.”

The discovery was announced at the 2017 American Association of Physical Anthropologists meeting, held July 21-23 at the Hyatt Regency Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the website of the AAPA, and was featured as a short piece in a feature story by Smithsonian magazine. The article noted that the fossils were found in the same area where a previous skeleton had been found—in 2011, in an area called the Bighorn Basin. The site is a large formation created by natural processes, and the original skeleton was about 3 feet (1 meter) long. (See “Anthropologist Discovers the World’s Most Beautiful Fossil.”)

The discovery drew a lot of attention, for good reason. The Bighorn Basin site—which is also known as Bear Lodge, the Nisqually Reservoir, and the Nisqually Valley National Park—could hold some of the oldest evidence for human occupation in North America. The site dates back to about 40,000 years ago, when the landscape was just forming with trees and lakes and lakeshore. The landscape had a lot of erosion, erosion that was continuing for a couple hundred thousand years afterward.

The new fossils also point to a large range of species within the Bighorn Basin, and the site is rich in fossils of other types of people. “The hominid skeleton, the teeth of the hominid, the footprints were at places in this cave that you wouldn’t usually guess. Some of them were at the edges of the cave. That’s how people walked there,” Jim Lake, director of NISQUALLY RESERVOIR, told the BBC. (See a video about a historic park.)

Even more interesting was the discovery of the remains of a Neanderthal, or archaic man. That means a species that was closely
