SARAH: That’s a complicated question! Well, it really isn’t. I do draw that you’re looking at it more than anything. And I try to think more, in terms of the different parts of the ship, or maybe the different crew members.
STEVEN: You are. I think it’s also a good exercise for the players as well. They are taking part in a process that they’re looking at, and they’re taking things from your sketches and you’re putting your things in your sketchbook.
SARAH: It’s a good way to draw as well! But you should take your sketches really seriously. Because they are real things. They aren’t just going to be in a notebook, where you can just flip over and draw.
STEVEN: Yeah, they’re real things, or they’re parts or events or whatever.
SARAH: That can be very fun too.
STEVEN: Especially if it’s an older ship, so they’re not always very clear on what’s going on in the background.
SARAH: Yeah, the best part of drawing a ship is you can do any of the things you wanna do as well. I’ll write down the name of each vessel, and if I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll write down the names of all the different races that make up the crew. I try to be as specific as possible.
STEVEN: Yeah.
SARAH: So I’ll try to take away a little bit of personality from what the ship is.
STEVEN: Yeah, it’s very fun.
SARAH: But just like I did for the other ship when talking about the Dreadnought, when I drew the Dreadnought, it was very specific. I wasn’t going to just write down all the races in the galaxy, because those would have been boring.
STEVEN: Yeah, they would have been dull. But even though you aren’t always going to be a space traveler in your drawings, at least for me, I am going to draw that kind of world.
JOE: Yeah, in the comic, you’re getting into the mindset of a person who travels, just not very frequently, to a lot of different places or things.
