The U.S. Department of Education may be trying to force college-level science majors to adopt a test-prep program.
It seems the federal government is worried about the rising popularity of science-based curricula at the country’s colleges, such as those found at elite colleges:
“It will require the adoption of a new assessment that would test students in an introductory introductory-level course on Earth and planetary sciences, biology, and environmental sciences.”
“The assessment will also include other elements of science education that are not routinely assessed in standard science courses, such as hands-on problem solving activities, laboratory work and field studies.”
This is exactly the kind of test that the EPA is trying to force universities to adopt for their students.
The EPA’s proposal would require colleges and universities to administer some kind of test that is used to assess students for occupational certifications and job-related certifications such as those given while getting their master’s or doctoral degrees.
The EPA says these certifications would be offered through the National Longitudinal Student Survey (NLSS) and that some colleges would have to include the tests in their program.
The tests would be used to determine which colleges’ students have the requisite competencies to perform jobs.
