Maiduguri, Nigeria (AP) — Hundreds of anti-government protesters torched six of the seven police cars that Nigerian state media said were burnt in the city of Maiduguri on Saturday, demanding the country’s government hand over to the army.

The unrest has been in Niger’s main cities and in rural areas throughout the country and forced police to deploy in major cities to maintain law and order for the first time since 2009. The government had said it would deploy the military to restore order. However, the troops weren’t deployed in Maiduguri on Saturday as authorities were still assessing the damage.

State-run News24, which has been providing live updates on the protests, said 1,000 protesters broke off from peaceful protests that had begun in several towns and went onto the streets in a “violent march.” The protesters threw stones, fire bombs and petrol bombs at police, killing one policeman and wounding three others.

Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, has ordered security forces to “furnish the best possible facilities for the police and to deploy them in every area where there is a need,” according to the state-run Nigerian newspaper, the News24.
