In the final hours ahead of the start of the presidential election, voters in Arizona are being urged to vote, but not to believe what they hear from media-savvy pollsters — and not to vote at all. Arizona polls are under a special burden in a state where the last Democrat to win statewide was the late Mark Goldwater in 1964.
Arizona’s state elections system has been called “broken” by the state’s own Republican governor, Jan Brewer, who said voters there should not believe the polls. The Republican National Committee complained about a federal lawsuit that, as of Tuesday, had been filed over the system.
“The voter-registration challenge in Arizona makes it all the more disappointing that the Republicans should be using these laws as a tactic in Arizona to suppress the vote,” said Rick Tyler, the party’s communications director in Indiana. “These are state laws that we expect the federal government to enforce. They’re not about voter suppression; it’s about making sure people who are in the voter registry have the right to vote.”
