There are many factors that contribute to success. A strong personality and the ability to communicate well are important. There are those for whom coaching a career is the ultimate goal with no way around it. The majority of us will find what we want to do professionally in the end. However, I would say that the best predictor of how long we will be coaching is the fact that we can predict when we will have time to get more coaching.
What advice do you have for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
For anyone aspiring to be a coach, you need a strong relationship with your team members. At the end of the day, you need to know what they can control and what they can’t. For example, it is not difficult to have an emotional attachment to the way you play. Your role as a coach is to keep a level of mental stability that matches your team.
You can also help your team by having a strong relationship with them on an individual level as well. This can include sharing your goals and values, telling them how your expectations have changed, etc. Also, you don’t get a great deal of responsibility to change the direction of the team once you’ve gotten them to the point where you can do it. If you have a strong support network, these will help you manage the game and not become so absorbed in your coaching that you lose sight of your goals and aspirations as a player.
What advice do you have for young athletes considering playing in the NFL?
Take a moment and analyze your goals regarding the next step in your journey and understand what is required to attain them. Is it possible that you will be lucky enough to have the opportunity to play in the NFL? If so, what will you want to accomplish in order to do this for an average of five years?
If you have the opportunity, do your best to learn as much as possible about your position. You can ask your coaches where you can find videos of practice or games that you may watch again in the offseason and plan out your routes and assignments in the film room. As a player, you might want to listen to and learn from coaches that already know the positions you’re going to play.
Lastly, do your best to stay informed about the team. Do I have a good relationship with my coach if I have a question about something? Can you email me back? Can you get me a copy of the schedule and score information for the upcoming game? This will give you
