And then there’s the problem of all the stress and exhaustion. The last thing on my mind is doing a lifetime’s worth of what I have to do. Life coaching is really the equivalent of writing a novel that will never see the light of day – you just hope it gets put away in a safe place.
Some coaches are willing to make sacrifices. I would never consider joining a professional bodybuilding competition like the Mr. Olympia.
My life coach, Steve Shirey, has told me to take my time. And he’s right. There are some things life coaching is best done in between appointments.
A few weeks ago I had a phone call from my old coach Bob Kihn. He’d been training me for the last four months and at one point the first time my workouts had progressed to a point where I felt physically vulnerable and asked him what would happen to me if I ever quit.
“Bob, I’m not quitting. I’m not even thinking about quitting.” He responded.
“Look, I’m really serious, what do you think would happen if you went back to your day job of making money for the next 80 years?” he asked.
“It makes no sense at all,” I said.
“It would be a complete waste of time,” he said. “You have to go back to work now. You just can’t go back to the way you were. The only way my son could possibly see you working out is if he was on the road with you.”
“So you won’t let me live,” I said. “I’m not going back to work. I guess I’ll just have to stay at home. I’m not going to let my kids hear about me doing this.”
