What is pencil illustration? – Pencil Sketch Ideas Pinterest

“It’s a creative outlet,” said Ben Stansall-Smith, who lives in Chicago and is the author of two booklets on the profession. “The art can be really emotional. It can be funny. There’s just something about writing. I’ve taken a lot of time out, and done a lot of sketches. It’s something I feel very good about.”

The idea for the pencil-illustrated book came to Stansall-Smith when a friend and fellow artist, Joe DiMaggio, asked him for a suggestion. He was asked to do the cover for DiMaggio’s autobiography, “Joe DiMaggio: the Greatest Football Player of the 21st Century” – a project that ended up drawing him a lot of commissions, including a series of “A.J. Special” sketches on sports-comic book covers. In 1996, Stansall-Smith moved to Minneapolis, worked at a drawing shop, got into the business of printing art supplies, found a publisher and made his career drawing sports-illustrated books.

“The idea of actually getting a book that was made especially for us and designed by Mike was something that was just exciting for us,” said Mark Miller, who also lives in Minneapolis and owns the illustrator’s business, Miller Illustrators.

The business, Miller Illustrators, is small. Only four people make the books, and they usually sell between 500 and 1,000 copies each.

When Miller started out, he did two or three books a year, and that was enough money to support himself and his wife. Today he and three others make the art for the books.

Miller, who runs his business with a friend, Mark Karras, also produces a website dedicated to sports-illustrated books, and works for the American Graphic Arts magazine. He has published two baseball books, and the baseball-illustrations-for-kids publication, GQ Presents: Children’s Baseball, features illustrations from a number of authors such as David Lynch, Tom Grummett, Terry Pratchett and Jim Zub.

Miller often sees kids who want to be baseball writers, but can’t find a publisher looking for someone to draw their books. “That makes it really nice for me because I’ve got the opportunity to write the book,” he said.
