By Jeff Rine, M.D.—In an ongoing effort to understand and combat the problem of obesity in the most powerful nation on the face of the Earth, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute launched a new project to examine how the prevalence of obesity can be reduced in America.
The goal of this effort is to develop a new epidemiological and laboratory technique to track, identify, and diagnose obesity in persons with normal weights—people who are not obese or overweight—while also conducting extensive clinical, population, and behavioral analyses to provide evidence-based and effective prevention and control strategies. The goal is to reach a place in our nation where we can ensure that obesity is not just a lifestyle choice that people make, but is actually prevented in many instances.
By working with physicians, health care professionals, researchers and community practitioners, Dr. Rine’s team will identify ways to make our nation’s obesity epidemic safer, while preserving the health of this nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
