I have had belly dancing for a couple of years, not very seriously. I don’t have too much belly fat, I’m around 160 lbs. Most of my belly fat comes from high-fat, low energy foods. I dance around the house sometimes, I just love to dance. There are a few exercises I’ll do and a few foods I’ll eat, but otherwise I just eat whatever I want.
Why did you lose all of those “belly” pounds?
I used to have trouble making weight. Sometimes I didn’t eat enough food, and would end up with excess weight that made it very tough to lose. At first when I came back with my new attitude and started losing belly fat, I thought maybe I’d go through a “fat reverse”. Because I ate more often than I normally do, I’d lose all my belly fat and have excess skin. But you have to remember those calories are all your body needs! I would have to eat 1000-2000 calories a day for several months to not gain back any body fat at all. If we ate less, we’d gain back more. I was only eating 300-400 calories a day to start because I’m on a very ketogenic diet, which has helped tremendously. It’s very low in carbohydrates.
How do you use your belly, when other people use it like food?
I love to use my belly for various exercises. The most important thing about my belly is that it provides excellent muscle tone and strength for all of my muscles. A belly dancer can use their belly as if you were trying to lift a barbell. They can use their body to do any number of simple strength exercises. There are a ton of options. I’ve used it in various other ways besides dancing, such as as a dip belt and a dip bandana.
Is belly dancing really safe for you?
Yes! I’m very cautious about my belly, and any injuries are rare. When we use Belly Dance.com, we never do any sort of high-impact exercises. My belly is my best friend, and I trust it to do what it should do. And the more you do it, the better you feel about it. You have to work really hard in order to be able to do it consistently or it will wear you out. That’s why it’s so important to follow the guidelines on the website when you enter any form of Belly Dancing.
